Dalyan and the river are overlooked by the famed Lycian tombs cut into the rock of the mountainside around 400BC, and now spectacularly lit up at night.
The ancient ruins of Kaunos with its acropolis, theatre and temples are just a kilometre away on the other side of the river. Take a rowing boat across the river and wander up to the site, or take it in as part of a longer day along the river. The site is being excavated year on year revealing new elements of the Hellenistic harbour city. It offers a quieter location to take in Turkey’s rich history than the more well know sites such as Ephesus.
We saw 300km of coast – Dalyan was most special - hope to be back.
